We would dress Barbie in beautiful white wedding dress and Ken would have his tux. Did you ever wonder though where the tradition of the white wedding dress came from? As I got older I did and here some interesting facts that I found:
In 1840 when Queen Victoria married she wore white. Prior to this brides wore gowns of various color. Queen Victoria in wanting to be an individual started a trend. Lets face it in the upper class who didn’t want to be like the Queen?
It’s important to remember also that back then women also wore their wedding dresses again. It was the practical thing to do. Maybe now you know when you see older houses why the closets were so small. They didn’t have many dresses.
In the Western culture white symbolized purity.
It really wasn’t until the Industrial Revolution that wedding dresses became more available. It was at this point that some of the department stores started carrying wedding dresses. Some of the stores had their own catalogs. People found it easy to shop like that much like people go online and shop at a stores site today. We shop online for it’s ease and because we lead busy lives. Back then transportation wasn’t as available as it is today.
Today white still seems to be the in color although I know a bride who several years ago wore red as a wedding dress. Now in China, the color red is considered good luck and a strong color that can keep away evil spirits. I don’t think she wore it for that reason but it’s interesting to see how other cultures view the color for the wedding dress.Toni Nelson - Nelson PhotographersWinners of the 2010 Brides Choice AwardWinners of the 2010 Best of TheKnot Weddings941-662-0022
